Rebecca Yin Photography – Business Setup & SmugMug Website Enhancement
Rebecca Yin approached me in September, ready to evolve her photography side hustle into a fully-fledged business. She needed clarity on legal setup, confidence in compliance, and a more polished online presence to attract family photography clients. Her existing SmugMug website had potential but lacked strategic structure, branding consistency, and conversion-focused content. After a free discovery call, I developed a detailed, paid proposal to guide her through business setup, website optimisation, and launch preparation — all tailored to her £500 budget.
Despite platform limitations and the complexity of legal compliance, the project was completed within the agreed timeframe, resulting in a compliant, client-ready business with a cohesive online presence.
What I Delivered for Rebecca Yin Photography:
Legal & Compliance Strategy Session I led a focused 1–2 hour video call to walk Rebecca through the essential legal and regulatory steps for setting up her business as a Sole Trader. We covered:
Legal structure implications, including personal liability and business operations.
HMRC registration thresholds, Self-Assessment timelines, and record-keeping best practices.
GDPR responsibilities and ICO registration, including a live walkthrough of the process via screen share.
This session gave Rebecca the clarity and confidence to move forward compliantly.
Comprehensive Research Documents To support Rebecca beyond the call, I created two tailored guides:
Financial Management: Advice on setting up a business bank account and choosing accounting software, with UK-specific recommendations.
Insurance: A breakdown of essential coverage types for photographers, including equipment and liability, plus a list of UK providers.
I also provided a Business Setup Checklist and a Business Plan template to support her planning and growth.
SmugMug Website Optimisation for her website, Rebecca Yin Photography. Rebecca had already invested in SmugMug, a platform well-suited to photographers. I enhanced her existing site to better reflect her brand and convert visitors into clients:
Branding Integration: Applied her custom logo, colour palette, and fonts for a cohesive visual identity.
UX & Navigation Review: Improved site structure and clarity, including a rewritten “About” page to highlight her story and approach to family photography.
Services Clarity: Refined service descriptions with visual examples and benefits.
Strategic CTAs: Added clear prompts like “Book Your Family Session” and “View Portfolio” to guide user action.
Portfolio Curation Advice: Helped Rebecca select and organise her strongest family photography work.
SEO Review: Maximised SmugMug’s built-in SEO features for better discoverability.
Social Media & Google Business Profile Integration: Strengthened links and branding across platforms.
We also discussed platform limitations — such as the lack of a booking system and blogging functionality — and how to navigate them strategically.
Social Media & Local Launch Strategy To support Rebecca’s public launch, I delivered:
Canva Templates: Branded social media assets for posts and banners, designed for easy reuse.
Custom Content Calendar: A realistic posting schedule with pre-planned ideas tailored to her availability.
Google Business Profile Setup: Guided optimisation with compelling visuals, service descriptions, and local keywords.
Local Marketing Brainstorm: Explored leaflet distribution, community partnerships, and launch week strategies to build excitement and attract ideal clients.
Rebecca Yin Photography now has a legally compliant foundation, a polished online presence, and a clear roadmap for growth. She can confidently attract clients, manage her business, and build momentum — all without the overwhelm. This comprehensive project was completed with my Launchpad package.
Testimonial
“A friend recommended Karen to me when I was struggling to get my business off the ground. As someone who isn’t naturally business-minded, I found the whole process quite overwhelming. Karen has been absolutely incredible and I honestly can’t recommend her highly enough! She really knows her stuff and has a wonderful way of breaking everything down into simple, manageable steps, which has been such a relief.
She also gave my website a complete refresh, and it now looks so much cleaner and more professional. Beyond her expertise, Karen is friendly, approachable and a pleasure to work with. Thank you so much, Karen, for all your guidance and support -you’ve made such a difference!” - Rebecca Yin - Rebecca Yin Photography
